Falling for Gerald & Kim
CONVERSATIONS With Ricky Lo
Sunday, September 23, 2007

Have Gerald Anderson and Kim Chiu fallen for each other, not just for reel but for real?

Their fans would love that to happen even as they themselves have fallen hard for Gerald and Kim who were a hit inside Pinoy Big Brother’s (PBB) house where they were discovered — and won their own following with their unguarded cute moments captured “live” by hidden cameras — and out of it.

Gerald, 17 (last March 7, Pisces), and Kim, 17 (last April 19, an Arian), were top-raters in their first soap starrer, ABS-CBN’s Sana Maulit Muli. After their first movie, First Day High (with Jason Abalos and Maja Salvador, another young loveteam), the former PBB housemates are starring in I’ve Fallen For You, directed by newcomer Lino Cayetano from a story/screenplay by Mel del Rosario, which Star Cinema is marketing as “a Valentine movie in September” (opening nationwide on Wednesday, Sept. 26) calculated to turn their fans kilig na kilig all the more. The movie is about how the young deal with affairs of the heart and then some.

Conversations put Gerald and Kim to a “compatibility test” a few months ago and here’s how they fared in the “If I were” department:

• FLOWER — Gerald: Rose...Kim: White Rose

• TREE — Gerald: Redwood...Kim: Narra

• ANIMAL — Gerald: Lion...Kim: Butterfly

• PERFUME — Gerald: Glamlab...Kim: Glamlab

• PART OF THE HOUSE — Gerald: The door...Kim: The living room

• FRUIT — Gerald: Banana...Kim: Mango

• CITY — Gerald: St. Louis...Kim: Paris

• HERO — Gerald: Dr. Jose Rizal...Kim: Ninoy Aquino

• PIECE OF JEWELRY -— Gerald: An earring...Kim: A diamond earring

• JUICE — Gerald: Banana juice...Kim: Just water

• HOLLYWOOD ACTOR — Gerald: Denzel Washington...Kim: Jessica Alba

• PIECE OF FURNITURE: Gerald: A TV set...Kim: A chair

• COLOR: Gerald: Red...Kim: Pink

Let’s find out further if Gerald and Kim do match.

What have you discovered about each other inside Big Brother’s house and out of it, and on the set of I’ve Fallen For You?

Gerald: Inside Big Brother’s house, we hardly did anything except sleep and eat, and eat and sleep. Now, Kim and I are both busy with work. Inside Big Brother’s house and out of it, I discovered that Kim is really masipag, matiyaga.

Kim: He hasn’t changed. He still is today what he was inside Big Brother’s house. Mabait pa rin siya.

What do you have in common?

Gerald: Sa food, we have the same preference. Pareho kaming mahilig sa lobster. Kim is fond of siomai which she always eats at home. Sa music, I like R ’n B while Kim likes love songs.

Kim: Sa music, Gerald prefers the noisy kind, ‘yung maiingay. I’m not fond of music. We both love to eat, especially pizza which direk Lino would feed us all the time on the set. Sometimes, Gerald would get irritated when I turn down his invitation for me to eat, dahil hindi naman ako nagugutom. He would say, “Bahala ka na nga!”

How are you similar to each other?

Gerald: We both come from broken families but despite that, we are both strong, pareho kaming matibay.

Kim: It can be sad coming from a broken family. Gerald comes from Gensan and I come from Cebu. Like me, he lives away from his siblings, walang kasamang kapatid. We are both dedicated to our work.

And how are you different from each other?

Kim: Gerald is outgoing and sociable, sobrang friendly siya. He has many showbiz buddies and they play basketball all the time. He’s a go-getter. He plays even with those from the squatter area. Wala siyang pinipili. I’m different from him. During my free time, I’d rather stay home and watch TV.

What is your happiest moment?

Gerald: My stay inside Big Brother’s house. But I was happiest when my family was intact. Do I miss my mom? Of course, I do. My dad is with me here. He has his own work.

Kim: Of course, when I won the PBB because that changed my life altogether. Talagang nabago ang buhay ko. Naging artista ako and now I am able to help my family. I send my siblings to school. My (older) sister is graduating na.

What makes you happy?

Kim: Being able to help my family.

What’s your most embarrassing moment?

Gerald: It happened when I was in pre-school. I peed in my pants at iniwasan ako ng mga classmates ko. Dyahe ‘yon, di ba?

What’s the saddest moment of your life?

Gerald: When I left Big Brother’s house. Inside kasi, I felt like I found several brothers and sisters. I thought that since medyo sikat na ako, baka maging okey na ang pamilya namin. Things didn’t turn out that way. Mas lalong naging complicated. My successful stay inside Big Brother’s house did not, as I hoped it would, help solve our family’s problems.

Kim: When our family broke up at nagkahiwa-hiwalay kami. Also, not knowing if I could continue with my studies.

Have you adjusted to living alone?

Gerald: At first, I thought masaya. Mag-isa ka lang. As the days went on, I started missing them. When I went home from work, hinahanap-hanap ko na ang mga kapatid ko. I was used to going home with food ready on the table. Now, I have to prepare my own food. Malungkot din pala.

What’s the worst thing written or rumored about you and how did you deal with it?

Kim: The tsismis that I sleep in Gerald’s house; na nag-iistambay daw ako doon. I never sleep in his house. Why should I when I have my own house naman. If I don’t sleep in our house, my father will get angry and he will surely look for me.

How do you handle your money?

Gerald: During my first year in showbiz, magastos ako. I asked Mr. M (Johnny Manahan, head of the ABS-CBN Talent Center) to save for me 80 percent of what I earn. The rest, I spend for my needs and for the rent of my place. I help send some of my relatives (nephews and nieces) to school. I also had my mom’s house in Gensan renovated. Pagbalik niya, she will be surprised to see na iba na ang bahay niya, mas bago na.

Kim: Half of my earnings I give to Talent Center kasi my savings ako doon. I don’t touch it. Mr. M assured me that he would take care of my money. He said that he doesn’t want me to be like other stars who squander their money buying and buying things. I divide the other half between my needs and those of my siblings. My father doesn’t have a regular job but he has his own small business; he’s a rice dealer in the Visayas.

Your father has children with his second wife, right?

Kim: Yes. I told him that I would support only my siblings but not his children (with his second wife). He knows that. I want to help my own siblings have a better life.

How do you deal with success and popularity?

Kim: I thank God for all the blessings. I realize that ‘yung pinagdaanan kong hirap ay mayroon palang sukli.

Who’s more moody?

Gerald: I am moody but Kim is more moody. When she’s not in the mood, I stay away from her. I know that she’ll be over it in five minutes.

Kim: It depends. Sometimes, ako; sometimes, siya. I get irked when he would wake me up at kinukulit o kinikiliti niya ako.

What do you usually fight about? How do you make up?

Gerald: Not naman fight but only tampuhan. Pag ako ang may kasalanan, I say “Sorry!” to her at once. But sometimes, even if she’s the one at fault, ako pa rin ang nag so-sorry sa kanya. What do we usually argue about? When I am sleepy and I tease and nag her.

Kim: No serious fights; just tampuhan.

Does Kim have the qualities that you want in an ideal girl?

Gerald: Oo naman. Mabait, maganda and no pretensions. What you see is what you get.

What’s your ideal man?

Kim: Mabait, loyal, gentleman at matiyaga.

Who are your role models?

Gerald: Piolo Pascual and Aga Muhlach. Good men, good actors.

Kim: Claudine Barretto. And Kris Aquino; she’s rich but she’s down-to-earth.

As a role model yourself, are you careful with what you say or do?

Gerald: Yes, of course. I have to set a good example to people my age.

How do you spend your time away from work?

Gerald: I sleep. I play basketball.

Kim: I stay home and watch DVDs.

Okay, what’s the real score between you?

Gerald: Close na close na close na friends. Always there for each other.

Kim Chiu harbors no ill feelings about her mother's abandonment
Rose Garcia
September 17, 2007

Dati kasi, iniiwasan talaga ni Kim na sagutin ang anumang question about her mother na nang-iwan sa kanila when she was only nine years old.

Eight years na, e."

Sabi ko nga, ‘Ano ba ‘to?'

Direk Lino Cayetano dares to shatter conventions in film debut

Sunday, September 16, 2007

Finally, here is a young director who does not rely on gay humor for entertainment, confrontational drama for climax and trivial resolutions for ever–after endings.

TV director Lino Cayetano has finally crossed over the silver screen medium via the teen drama "I’ve Fallen For You" starring Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson. His biggest break since conceptualizing and directing "Starstruck," "I’ve Fallen For You" solidifies another crossover move from Lino, that of GMA to ABS–CBN.

The 29–year-old director clarified however that he had parted well with his former network. "Nagpaalam naman ako at pinapayagan naman nila ako to do projects, one of those projects nga was the one where ‘Maalaala Mo Kaya’ featured the story of my father, Sen. Rene Cayetano."

This opportunity, Lino said, made him realize all the more that his heart belongs to directing which is a medium to communicate with people. "My dad was once criticized for saying na mas marami pa siyang natutulungan sa programa niya ("Compañero y Compañera") na isang oras lang sa isang linggo compared to hours and hours in the Senate. And he is right. Alam nating lahat kung gaano ka–powerful ang industriya natin kaya sa opportunities na nakukuha ko, I make sure na I get to insert values on spirituality and family."

Lino had been recently disappointed when his episode in the twin–plot "Huwag Kang Lilingon" was dropped from the Star Cinema horror. But it all turned out for the better because with "I"ve Fallen For You," Lino—along with good friend and known screenwriter Mel del Rosario—had more chances to inject the things they want in the story, setting the film beyond cinematic cliches. "I’ve Fallen For You," Lino said did not only confine its story with the usual boy-meets-girl, boy-falls-for-girl and vice versa, boy-and-girl-break up and the requisite happy ending.

ALL ABOUT INTENTIONS

The press people had a difficult time cornering Direk Lino into answering controversial questions because of his mild–mannered and downright sincere nuances. His admirable characteristics are also evident in his work output.

But Lino would not be denied of the values he strongly believes in. "Hindi ko lang talaga style yung maging masungit. Tahimik lang talaga ako. I remember this one time na nagalit ako sa set, nagsisi lang ako pagkatapos so from then on, ayoko nang magalit."

In "I’ve Fallen For You," the only sequence that tested Lino’s temper limits were the music video–ish moments of Kim and Gerald. "Hindi ko talaga alam kung bakit ako naiinis sa mga ganung moments siguro dahil alam ko na hindi lang sa mga ganung ka–cinematic na ways puwedeng ipakita ang sweetness. I can be sweet and make the object of my sweetness feel it from across the room. Hindi kailangang mag–touch even ang mga fingers to show sweetness."

But the good thing is that Star Cinema has allowed much of Lino’s creative vision into the movie. "Masaya naman ako sa outcome. Sobrang happy ako na Star Cinema allowed us to pitch yung mga kuwentong gusto namin at mga laman ng pelikula na gusto naming ibahagi sa mga tao."

The director told the Manila Bulletin last Friday, "It’s because of the stereo–typing of such romance stories that we’ve robbed off this generation of their dreams. That’s the biggest crime committed to this generation. Before, pag tinanong mo ang kabataan kung ano ang ambisyon nila, they wanted to become lawyers, writers and doctors. Now when you ask them, ang gusto na lang nila magtapos ng two–year courses para makapag–trabaho sa call center para sa disenteng kita. If we think about it, hind lang naman love life and problema ng mga 17 at 18 year olds. Marami pa silang ibang conflicts na pinagdadaanan.

These conflicts, of course, make for what these young people will become in the future. Lino’s point is that if the fans of Kim and Gerald will be able to mirror reality through this romance–drama, he will be able to move them. "At hindi naman ito hard sell. We tackled these issues, even adult issues surrounding the parents of the pair, in a manner na may matututunan ang lahat. This is not just a love story but a movie about love that’s full of conflicts and choices."

Lino strongly believes that values about God and family can heal any heartache and repair broken spirits. During the time when his father and former Senator Rene Cayetano was fighting for his life against cancer, Lino had the opportunity to live in a motel room with his parents and siblings now–Senators Pia and Allan Peter and brother Ren–ren. "It was the only time all six of us were able to be together again and my mother was so happy that time and it’s ironic that it happened at a time we were all suffering because of my dad’s condition."

Lino donated his liver to his father when late legislator was battling cancer and the operation was completed. He recalled, "After the operation, my father said he would devote what’s left of his time as a public servant to reach out to as many Filipino families as possible." When he died, it was then that I realized the importance of his vision. I hope I can help him share it through film and TV."

Lino studied Mass Communication at the University of the Philippines where he took certain film subjects. He went on to take further studies on film at the New York Film Academy and NYU. Aside from "Starstruck," Lino directed other TV projects for GMA. When he moved to ABS–CBN, he did a couple of more episodes of "Maalaala Mo Kaya" and did second unit directing with Maryo J. de los Reyes in "Mga Anghel na Walang Langit" and "Calla Lilly." Aside from Maryo J. de Los Reyes, Lino considers Lino Brocka and Ishmael Bernal among his biggest film influences.

Kimerald will set hearts on fire

By Isah V. Red

IF IT’S not September, you’d think it’s Valentine’s Day on the 26th. Yes, that’s when the teen romantic flick I’ve Fallen For You opens in theaters nationwide. The movie, which marks the official entry of Lino Cayetano in the realm of moviemaking, stars the most exciting teamup ever imagined on television and now crossing over to films—Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson.

Cayetano started his career as director in television. Remember the first and most successful StarStruck edition on GMA Network? This is the guy responsible for that breakthrough show. But his ultimate goal is to be able to make a movie, and Star Cinema has made that a reality.

But it is the tandem of Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson that is setting hearts on fire since they became an item inside the Big Brother House where they met as housemates for the reality TV’s Teen Edition. Kim became the Big Winner, while Gerald settled for the third spot.

Kim’s win didn’t stop third-placer Gerald from making a connection with the teenager from Cebu. Since both of them speak the same dialect—Gerald lived in General Santos when their family decided to move back to the Philippines from the US— it seemed easy for these two southerners to get into a getting-to-know-each-other mode, which is actually the first step in a romantic scenario.

While the two have been together in movie before—that was the smorgasbord of a teen flick called First Day High—this is their first outing as a romantic tandem.

In the top-rating soap opera Sana Maulit Muli, the two cemented their stature as the teen love team to beat.

First-ever Kim-Gerald starrer to premiere in Cebu

By Marigold P. Lebumfacil

Thursday, September 13, 2007 (INTRO) For the very first time, Star Cinema will hold a Cebu premiere of one of its most anticipated big screen offerings this year.

The teen romance “I’ve Fallen For You,” featuring Cebuana actress and “Pinoy Big Brother” Teen Edition big winner Kim Chiu and her perennial partner Gerald Anderson, will have its premiere showing—ahead of its Manila opening—on September 24 at SM City Cebu.

“This will mark the start of more movie premieres by Star Cinema in Cebu. Cebuanos can surely expect more to come,” Ms. Josie Pereyra of JSP Ads and Promos, which handles Star Cinema events in Cebu, told The FREEMAN Entertainment.

This movie will finally test the marketability of the team-up of Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson on the big screen, as it has already proven its big draw on television via their successful first-ever primetime teleserye, “Sana Maulit Muli,” which ended early this year.

This early, the movie is predicted to seal their stature as the most promising love team of their generation—with insiders from Star Cinema, who have seen the film’s rushes, saying that the two young artists have taken their onscreen chemistry to a whole new level.

“I’ve Fallen For You” is helmed by TV director Lino Cayetano. This is his first movie as well.

“We’re very proud of what we did for ‘I’ve Fallen For You,’” said Kim. “Direk Lino is such a good director kasi nailabas niya po ang emotions na hindi ko akalaing kaya ko palang ilabas. Natuwa po ako dahil may bago kaming maipapakita sa aming mga supporters,” Kim added.

“Kung paano niyo po kami sinuportahan sa teleserye naming sana ganoon din po ka-warm ang pagtanggap niyo sa amin (in this movie),” Gerald added.

Kim relishes the trust that Star Cinema has given them. “Kaya po talagang todo-todo ang pagtatrabaho namin for ‘I’ve Fallen For You,’ kasi po alam namin na marami ang mag-aabang kung ano po ang kalalabasan nito. At again, uulitin ko po na napaka-proud namin ni Gerald about this project.”

According to media releases, “I’ve Fallen For You” presents and defines love in a new way. For the past months, word has spread about how hard the intense and good-looking young director Lino Cayetano has been working on this first film of his.

The film has been said to be a product of months of planning, shooting, conceptualizing and envisioning, all of which resulted to a project that the cast, Star Cinema and Direk Lino are most proud of.

And Star Cinema is glad with the results. According to producer Marizel Samson-Martinez, “We are very happy that Direk Lino came on board for this project. He is very meticulous, hardworking and it showed in this endeavor.”Mel Mendoza-del Rosario, the film’s screen writer, added, “This is definitely a dream come true for Lino. He made his first narrative/drama with MMK and for me it’s like seeing him graduate to another level. I am not just proud of the hard work, or the passion and dedication he had devoted to his first film, but I am also grateful to God because this is an answered prayer for us.”

The movie is very close to Direk Lino’s heart as he injected family values he grew up with into the film. Direk’s only wish was, “Sana noon pa ako gumawa ng pelikula para napanood ng Daddy ko,” referring to the late senator, Compañero Renato “Rene” Cayetano.

“I’ve Fallen For You,” which is shot in the scenic highlands of Tagaytay and Antipolo, delves on young love and how this affects their families and their decisions in life. It follows the story of two young individuals who are faced with very contemporary and real-life situations. How will the story end?

“I’ve Fallen For You” will be shown in 100 cinemas all over the country on September 26, but Cebu will see it first this 24th of September at SM CityCebu.

Synopsis

Written by Mel del Rosario
Directed by Lino Cayetano

Love is space and time measured by the heart; it feels no burden, thinks nothing of trouble and attempts what is above its strength. Stories of Great Love never have endings.
The list of UPCAT passers is up and it says ‘Alex Reyes’ passed. This good news makes a boy and a girl jump. The host of the anime costume play announces that ‘Alex Reyes’ wins the grand prize for the night. From the stairs, a girl and a boy rush to claim the prize. There are two ‘Alex Reyes’; this spells disaster.
Alex Boy (Gerald Anderson) returns to the Philippines from Singapore with his mom, Tessa (Chinchin Gutierrez). His father’s job in a multinational company brought them to live in many parts of the world and he really never had something he can call home. He can’t seem to focus on anything; he easily starts a hobby but never really finishes it. With the news of his parents breaking-up, Alex Boy has to do everything to achieve what he has always wanted; to live in one place as a family together.
Alex Girl (Kim Chui) has set goals for herself and her family. She has to pass UP and get a job later to help her crumbling family. The inn-restaurant her family owns isn’t doing well and it doesn’t help that her parents, Jonathan (Albert Martinez) and Vangie (Lotlot de Leon), are always fighting. She has no time for anything but to find ways to earn. Perhaps, money would bring the peace in her family that she has always wanted.
Alex Boy finds in Alex Girl the perfect partner for a tandem cycling competition he wants to join. In desperate need of funding for her studies, the prize of fifty thousand pesos convinces Alex Girl to team up with her annoying namesake. But everything Alex Girl has is talent; she lacks the proper techniques needed to win. As Alex Boy teaches her the techniques she needs, he learns from this driven girl the virtue of responsibility. In turn, Alex Boy makes Alex Girl see what she misses in her life; having fun.
Two young hearts find company and comfort in each other. As they decide to nurture their young love, fate challenges them to leap over the greatest challenge their love story would ever face; the story of their own families’ past.
I’ve Fallen for You is a romantic light drama that tells about the universal story of great love that will surely capture both young and old hearts.
